Cavallotto website – click here

Exclusive owner and producer of the famed Bricco Boschis Cru, Cavallotto is situated in the heart of Barolo’s Castiglione Falletto commune. From here the Cavallotto family craft a set of wines that are as traditional as they are delicious. Castiglione Falletto’s sandy/calcareous clays combine with Cavallotto’s meticulous viticulture and low yields to produce wines that offer both bewitching depth and texture as well as the classical structure that plucks away at the heartstrings of Barolo devotees.

Area: Piemont/ Piemonte

Source Vines/Vineyards: MGA Bricco Boschis, parcel of “Vigna San Giuseppe” – Nebbiolo for Barolo 100%.

Characteristics of the wine:

Vinification: fermented with indigenous yeasts, macerated with submerged cap for 20-35 days.

Ageing: Traditional in Slavonian Oak Casks for 4-5 years.

Bottle Ageing: 12 months before release into the market.

Organoleptic Characteristics: From this cru come wines of great structure but with elegance and complexity. The initial perfumes are fruity and followed by floral aspects, then spices, all open and intense. Generally excellent cellaring potential.

Gastronomic Accompaniment: This wine finds its best matches at the table, with first courses of prosciutto, salami, Alba beef tartare and vitello tonnato. The wine is best with second courses of red meat in general, but also grilled fish or white meats, or with hard and aged cheeses. Desserts with dark chocolate are also a good match, or it can be enjoyed as a “vino da meditazione” (a wine for meditiation) by iteslf.

“A combination of an extraordinary vintage and a fantastic producer are behind this stunning wine. It opens with aromas recalling woodland berry, pipe tobacco, forest floor, balsamic notes of camphor and new leather. Still youthfully austere, the firmly structured palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, licorice, ground clove and iron notes set against tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it well balanced. Drink 2028–2046.”
— 99 Points, Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

“A certified organic wine, the Cavallotto 2016 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is born in vineyards on a beautiful ridge in Castiglione Falletto with wide views of both the sunrise and the sunset. From this magical site at the heart of the Barolo appellation comes a wine that represents the very best of vintage and territory. Dark fruit, dried cherry, wild plum, rose and iron ore meet a perfect intersection that gives this Barolo a beautiful sense of balance and inner energy. Fruit comes from a 2.4-hectare plot with southwest-facing vines that are 60 years old. After destemming, the grapes see 28 days of skin contact (semi-submerged caps) in steel tanks. Secondary fermentation occurs in cement in the spring following the harvest. The wine is aged in Slavonian oak for 60 months. Production is 8,794 bottles and other larger formats.”
—98 Points Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

“An impressive red, this features a beam of pure cherry and rose, with strawberry, currant, iron and tobacco notes in supporting roles. Firm and dry, with ripeness midpalate, this lingers on the fruit, mineral and underbrush aftertaste. Combines finesse and intensity. Best from 2025 through 2045.”
— 98 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

“Casiglione Falletto. Cask sample. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Deep and brooding dark nose loaded with stony minerally notes. Hints of dried fruits mingle with cherry. Lush, juicy and long and sensationally balanced. Gorgeous fine gravelly tannins supporting the fruit. Long and with a full spread on the finish. Amazing depth of flavour.”
—18/20 Points Walter Speller (JancisRobinson.com)

“The 2016 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is a powerhouse. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of dark fruit in a brooding, almost somber Barolo that demands patience. Hints of licorice, spice, leather, menthol, incense and black cherry fruit begin to emerge with time in the glass. I won’t be surprised if the 2016 turns out even better than this note suggests. There is a ton of potential here. I find the combination of power and translucent energy both evocative and quite promising.”
—95+ Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“The 2001 San Giuseppe remains one of the great Barolo drinking experiences for me. And I would expect the 2016 to be on a par with any of the great wines that have been made at this Estate over the last 30 years. As always with Cavallotto it will need 15+ years in the cellar to show it’s brilliance.”
— David Haglund

“Mid, shaded garnet. Intense, layered nose with lots of sumptuous fruit but no shortage of Barolo character. Still quite youthful but the liquorice layers and citrus-peel notes add up to something special.”
—17/20 Points, Jancis Robinson MW
