Cavallotto Bricco Boschis Barolo 2018

Crafted from the Vigne Colle Sud-Ovest and Punta Marcello parcels of the cru, this is stunning Barolo with the perfume of raspberry, rosemary and dried plum. The classically tannin structure is offset by a core of densely woven, velveteen fruit. The wine spends about 20 days on skins before being aged in Slovenian-oak casks of various sizes for 3 years and 6 months.

Area: Piemonte/ Piedmont

Exclusive owner and producer of the famed Bricco Boschis Cru, Cavallotto is situated in the heart of Barolo’s Castiglione Falletto commune. From here the Cavallotto family craft a set of wines that are as traditional as they are delicious. Castiglione Falletto’s sandy/calcareous clays combine with Cavallotto’s meticulous viticulture and low yields to produce wines that offer both bewitching depth and texture as well as the classical structure that plucks away at the heartstrings of Barolo devotees.

Source Vines/Vineyards: MGA Bricco Boschis – Nebbiolo for Barolo 100% coming from the parcels of Colle Sud Ovest, Vigna Punta Marcello and Vigna San Giuseppe.

Characteristics of the wine:

Vinification: fermented with indigenous yeasts, macerated with submerged cap for 20-35 days.

Ageing: Traditional in Slavonian Oak Casks for 3-3.5 years.

Bottle Ageing: 6-12 months before release into the market.

Organoleptic Characteristics: Optimal structure but with already-soft tannins, and with an open, intense perfume that gives this Barolo characteristic of both power and great elegance. Complex and fragrant, can be enjoyed young but has great aging potential.

Gastronomic Accompaniment: This wine finds its best matches at the table, with first courses of prosciutto, salami, Alba beef tartare and vitello tonnato. The wine is best with second courses of red meat in general, but also grilled fish or white meats, or with hard and aged cheeses. Desserts with dark chocolate are also a good match, or it can be enjoyed as a “vino da meditazione” (a wine for meditation) by itself.

“Capturing the freshness and finesse of the vintage, this has classic varietal aromas of rose petal, forest berry, camphor and underbrush. Reflecting the nose, the vibrant, focused palate delivers ripe red cherry, crushed raspberry, wild mint and star anise set against taut, refined tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced. While you won’t have to wait years before enjoying this, it will also age at least another decade or more. Best 2024–2033. “— 95 Points, Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

“The Cavallotto 2018 Barolo Bricco Boschis (a certified organic wine) is a lovely expression with fruit from one of the most beautiful sites in Castiglione Falletto, measuring 7.3 hectares. The wine is streamlined and tight with forest berry, blackcurrant and spice. It is taut and silky, showing fruit that has been shaped by cool nights and warm days. Bricco Boschis always delivers a special sense of sharpness and focus. Production is 23,747 bottles.”— 94 Points Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

“Castiglione Falletto. A blend of several samples taken from the most representative casks, although there will be a part of San Giuseppe blended in. ‘With large oak casks the wines can differ so much between them.’ Lustrous mid ruby with an orange tinge. Generous deep nose of beautiful ripe fruit. Lifted and vibrant fruit on the attack, long and concentrated but maintaining impeccable elegance. Gorgeous ripe, intense, tactile tannins like a carpet rolled out for the vibrant fruit.”—17++/20 Points Walter Speller (
