“Transparency of fruit with strawberry, walnut, hazelnut and stone undertones. It’s full to medium-bodied with tight, chewy tannins that are long and intense. Very nicely polished, yet forceful. A new wine from Pio Cesare. From four vineyards: Ornato, Briccolina, La Serra, Lirano. Made only for this year. Drink in 2024.” – James Suckling 97/100

Pio Cesare Barolo del Comune Di Serralunga D’Alba DOCG 2017

Pio Cesare website – click here

Area: Piedmont/ Piemonte

Grape Variety: Nebbiolo 100%

Vineyards: in the occasion of our 140th anniversary, we have decided to pay a tribute to the soil and terroir of Serralunga d’Alba and to produce in very small quantity a Barolo sourced from our 4 Family-owned Properties in this Commune: Ornato, La Briccolina, La Serra e Lirano, reproduced by a multicolor tetragon on the label.

Vinification: the Nebbiolo grapes sourced from these 4 vineyards are blended before the fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Long skin contact maceration for 30 days at high temperatures.

Ageing: in big French and Slavonian oak “botti” for about 30 months; for a small amount in barriques as well.

Notes: conceived and produced exclusively to celebrate the 140th anniversary of our long Family history only: 1881 bottles produced (and very few magnums), a nod to our founding year.

For Pio Cesare is like going back to our roots: our ancestors used to buy grapes from historical suppliers based in Serralunga and Serralunga has been the very first Commune in the Barolo region where we started to process of acquiring vineyards in the 1970s (with the Ornato Estate).

The special character of Serralunga – complexity, structure and longevity – has always represented for us the starting point to produce the Barolo Pio, high quality, authentic and iconic.

“Ripe plum, blue flower, cedar and sunbaked earth aromas lead the way. On the full-bodied, savory palate, tightly knit, refined tannins envelope raspberry jam, fleshy black cherry and baking spice. Best 2023–2029. Kerin O’Keefe” – 94/100Wine Enthusiast
