Vintage 2015
“This wine is simply stellar, a compendium of everything a great Amarone should be: the way this utterly superb wine meshes lusciousness, concentration, depth, and complexity is a university course on how to make great Amarone and what it should taste like. Medium red, a bit less saturated and dark than the 2015 Mazzano.
Deep, intense, sexy and utterly captivating aromas of wild red berries, ultra-ripe red cherries, kirsch, raspberry reduction, iron and wild herbs, complemented by sweet spices and a violet top-note, and hints of marmelady noble botrytis. Then utterly seamless in the mouth, with hints of soy sauce and Oriental spices giving the velvety raspberry, red cherry, licorice, Oriental spices, and blood orange flavours a sultry quality. Incredibly sappy but vibrant, with an explosive, endless finish of pure velvet that grabs the taste buds and just won’t let go.
The grapes were hit by noble rot as is typical of the Campolongo di Torbe cru even in these times of climate change (by contrast, Masi’s other famous Amarone cru, Mazzano, is a very dry site so noble rot practically never appears there), and the ensuing glycerine-induced “illusion of sweetness” (a sweetness due to the noble rot, not residual sugar) is absolutely thrilling and magical, like only truly great, great, great Amarones deliver.”
